We strongly recognise the need for psychiatric intensive care facilities within Derbyshire to ensure our most unwell service users don’t have to travel far from home for their care. With this in mind, we are developing Kingfisher House, a 14-bedded male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit on the Kingsway Hospital site in Derby.
Derbyshire does not currently have a PICU and people who need this level of support currently need to travel outside of the county to access an appropriate bed. National legislation requires that people no longer inappropriately travel out of area and it is therefore necessary and beneficial for Derbyshire to develop its own PICU facility.
There is sufficient demand for a local PICU, with an average of 14 men being supported out of area at any one time.
Kingfisher House adjoins our new Carsington Unit, which allows for easier step-down care as service users' health improves.
