What do your Specialist Day Services teams do?

The Specialist Day Services provide specialist group programmes for individuals who are predominantly over the age of 65 and are experiencing a range of mental health difficulties.

We also host regular question and answer evenings on subjects such as dementia - more details below.

The care team consists of mental health nurses, occupational therapists and nursing assistants.

We also have links with other professionals such as GPs, community mental health teams, social workers and physiotherapists that we can access should you require further support whilst attending the service.

Whilst attending the Specialist Day Services you will be allocated a named professional who will be responsible for your care.

Your named professional will usually contact you before your first attendance.

You may be invited to attend the Specialist Day Service prior to starting your sessions to discuss your current difficulties with a view to exploring the different ways our staff can support you.

Where is the service located?

The Specialist Day Services run between two separate sites.

Midway Specialist Day Service is based in Ilkeston, running on a Monday and Tuesday for clients from the Amber Valley and Erewash areas.

Dovedale Specialist Day Service is based in Derby, running on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for clients from Derby City (North and South), South Derbyshire and the Derbyshire Dales areas.

However, the service is flexible and we can accommodate your preference of location for attending the group therapies. See bottom of page for contact details.

How can the Specialist Day Service help?

The Specialist Day Services offer the following group programmes:

The Living Well Programme is a six-week course offering you the opportunity to learn more about your dementia diagnosis. The group’s aim is to help and support you in coming to terms with your diagnosis.

You are welcome to attend sessions with a family member or carer.

We offer practical advice on living well with dementia and provide you and your carer or family member with the opportunity to gain any information you feel might be of help to you.

The Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Programme is an eight-week course that provides evidence-based treatment found to improve cognitive skills and quality of life should you be experiencing symptoms of mild to moderate dementia.

The therapy uses themed activities that are designed to stimulate the brain and tailored to meet your needs.

The Lifestyle Matters Programme is an eight-week course that promotes mental wellbeing and healthy ageing should you be over the age of 65.

The aim is to help and support you with active daily living. The programme recognises the importance of taking steps to be as healthy as you can to improve your capacity to cope with the changes that you are experiencing.

The group also encourages development of community support networks by promoting engagement in community activities.

The Coping with Emotions group is an 8 week course that aims to help and support you in exploring emotions, including symptoms of anxiety and depression. It aims to provide you with tools to help you manage symptoms to achieve a more balanced emotional wellbeing.

How to access our service

If you feel that you would benefit from our service then you may contact your GP, Memory Assessment Service or community mental health professional if you have one.

They will be able to refer you into our service where we will discuss which group would be most suited to your needs.

We will then make contact with you as soon as possible.

Transport to and from the day hospital can be arranged if required.

Dementia 'question and answer' evenings

Question and answer evenings are held every other month, and currently take place virtually on Microsoft Teams.

These sessions are for people who are diagnosed with dementia, carers, and anyone who has an interest in the condition.

A panel of different professionals including consultant psychiatrists, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists and occupational therapists trained in dementia care will be available to answer your questions and provide advice.

Upcoming dementia Q&A sessions can be found by visiting the events page.
