Mental health professionals in Derby, inspired by this year’s World Mental Health Day, have formed a support group to visit schools and talk to students about their emotional wellbeing.
This includes discussions about the stresses of school work, peer pressure, bullying, including cyber bullying, substance misuse and self-harm.
The parents and students are reminded of the school nurse and emotional well-being practitioner’s availability within each school as well as helplines and services available to them.
The theme of World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, is “Children and mental health in a changing world”. Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, as the city’s leading provider of mental health care for children and young people, has formed the HART group (Hope, Awareness, Resilience, Trust) – and members have been amazed by the response from schools in Derby.
The Derbyshire Healthcare teams involved in HART are CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services); Early Intervention Service, supporting people who have experienced their first episode of psychosis; Children’s Services (including Healthy Schools Team, School Nurses and Emotional Wellbeing Practitioners); and Breakout+, the young people’s drug and alcohol service.
Schools visited so far include Landau Forte College and Da Vinci Academy, with visits planned to further schools including City of Derby Academy, Merrill Academy, Bemrose School and Noel-Baker Academy.
