A Derbyshire NHS Nurse has been shortlisted at a national awards ceremony for his efforts to deliver strong leadership and mentoring as well as addressing health inequalities to improve health outcomes for patients.
Enoch Marandure, known to many as ‘Toby’, who is Head of Nursing for Community Mental Health Services and Substance Misuse at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has been named as a finalist at the B.A.M.E Health & Care Awards for ensuring high-quality and compassionate nursing practice and for his proactive approach to reducing inequalities for BAME patients and BAME staff .
The B.A.M.E Health & Care Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and allies from across the health and care fields in making significant improvements in career development support for Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff. This includes exceptional initiatives and leadership, and the improvement of services, or access to services for people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.
Toby has been shortlisted for the Nurse of the Year award. Toby oversees and manages various aspects of mental health care delivery, and plays a pivotal role in ensuring the delivery of high quality, person-centred care to individuals with mental health needs while also promoting innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within mental health services.
Dave Mason, Interim Director of Nursing, AHPs and Patient Experience at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Huge congratulations to Toby on being shortlisted for this award. As a Trust, we are wholeheartedly committed to a culture of diversity and equality for both staff, patients, and the general public.
“Toby has worked incredibly hard to support his colleagues and patients. He has a natural ability to mentor student nurses and coach junior staff in their respective areas. Toby has dedicated time to his colleagues, in particular his work with black and minority ethnic nurses to advocate for reduced health inequalities and his support of non-BME colleagues to care for diverse patients, their carers and families. A standout achievement of Toby’s is that he has gone out into his community and encouraged people to access health services by debunking myths in his community and addressing any health concerns people have. This is something that is particularly important to us, so it’s great to see Toby’s work in this area recognised on a national level.”
Shortly after receiving the news, Toby Marandure, Head of Nursing for Community and Substance Misuse at Derbyshire Healthcare, said: “I am delighted to be shortlisted for this award. I am very passionate about health inequality work and creating a culture where everyone, no matter what their background is, can flourish. It is particularly important for me to advocate for the needs and rights of patients receiving mental health care, to ensure patients are involved in decision-making regarding their care, as well as addressing health inequalities to improve access and support for diverse communities.
“This can only be achieved through strong leadership and management to foster a positive working environment for colleagues to thrive in. I have tried to do this in various ways, including supporting the professional development of nursing staff by providing training opportunities, mentoring and supervision.”
The winners will be announced during a ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London on Thursday 26 September.
