A team of top Derbyshire NHS therapists is running a free half-day workshop in Derby on Monday (11 August) to enable people to make the most of their summer by learning to be more ‘in the moment’.
The Talking Mental Health Derbyshire team, ranked amongst the top talking therapies teams in the country, will be at Derbyshire Healthcare’s Kingsway site from 1.30pm on Monday to deliver a free three-hour introduction to mindfulness, with practical tips on how to stay more present in the moment by paying greater attention to feelings, thoughts and the world around us.
Whilst feelings of low mood and anxiety are more often associated with the winter, when the days are shorter and there is less sunlight, the summer brings its own pressures:
Heat and humidity, which cause people to have trouble sleeping
Disrupted schedules, with children at home all day, leading to a loss of routine
Body image issues, as shorts and bathing suits become the norm
Financial concerns, as people worry about the cost of summer holidays and then paying for extra childcare whilst at work.
Mindfulness may be able to help. A report published in January 2014 analysing data from 47 clinical trials, and involving 3,000 participants, suggests that mindfulness, which combines meditation techniques with elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), produces measurable improvements of up to 20% in symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to people who practise another activity, and can also help alleviate feelings of stress and enhance quality of life.
Talking Mental Health Derbyshire, a partnership between Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Derwent Rural Counselling Services and Relate, provides mindfulness-based courses in a range of settings to try to help people with common mental health problems. Over the past month, it has introduced the shorter three-hour workshops to support people who are experiencing difficulties but perhaps aren’t at a point where they feel ready or able to ask for help.

Julie Westrupp, Team Leader of Talking Mental Health Derbyshire says: “This workshop will be ideal for people who may not be in need of a series of treatments, but who are keen to get some practical tips and advice on how to maintain their mental well-being. Learning the basic tools of mindfulness will be a great way to help people keep cool this summer, even when the sun is blazing and tempers are flaring. Addressing issues at an early stage could also prevent a more severe problem in the future. Think of it as sun cream for the soul.”
