Derby County legend Roger Davies and Rammie dropped by at Dovedale Day Hospital on Thursday (10 November) to meet patients and staff, and to check out the unit’s DCFC themed Remembrance Day exhibition, collages and memorabilia collection.
With the goal of promoting social inclusion, nursing assistant Neil Leahy scored a hatrick when he decided to organise a creative therapy group for the day hospital’s patients, focussed on a common interest of all: Derby County Football Club.
Not only have the group developed long-lasting relationships with their peers and created works of art for the unit’s DCFC exhibition, they were also treated to a guest appearance by club ambassador Roger Davies and Rammie to blow the final whistle on what has been a “fabulous” project.
Promoting social inclusion
Davies provided a fascinating insight into playing for Derby County in the glory days of the 1970’s – a time many Dovedale Day Hospital patients will have fond memories of. Roger Davies also spoke about what Brian Clough OBE was like as a person and as a manager, his memories of the club and how Derby County has transformed over the last 40 years, on and off the pitch.
Patients and staff asked Davies questions about his footballing career and what the future looks like for the Rams under the management of chairman Mel Morris and newly re-appointed manager Steve Mcclaren.
On the project and the visit of Davies, nursing assistant Neil Leahy said: "I would like to say a big thank you to Derby County, Roger Davies and Rammie for concluding our DCFC creative therapy group in such a memorable fashion.
"Fabulous opportunity to reminisce"
"The activities we have been running recently at Dovedale Day Hospital have brought a lot of enjoyment, pleasure and wellbeing to our patient group and enabled them to socially interact with their peers. It has offered us a fabulous opportunity to reminisce about the history of our local football club, Derby County, and helped bring back many wonderful memories of watching the game with friends and relatives."
