Health chiefs from Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have been highly commended for their outstanding contributions to equality and diversity by being awarded two national gongs.

As part of Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Week 2015, which runs from 11 – 15 May, Steve Trenchard (Chief Executive) and Carolyn Green (Executive Director of Nursing and Patient Experience) of Derbyshire Healthcare have scooped the prestigious NHS Employers Diverse Leaders Award for their efforts of ensuring equality and diversity issues are high on the Trust’s agenda.

What is the Diverse Leaders Award?

Each year, NHS Employers, the voice of employers in the NHS, works closely with a cohort of health and social care organisations as part of its Equality and Diversity Partners Programme. The purpose of the programme is to support the Partners to embed and integrate diversity and equality into their organisations, to help create more inclusive and engaged workplaces.

In recognition of the importance of leadership and integrating diversity into the workplace, NHS Employers recently introduced the Diverse Leaders Award. This award is the opportunity for each of the Partner organisations on the programme to identify and nominate an individual or team within their organisation that has been instrumental in supporting the diversity agenda.

Paul Deemer, Head of Equality, Diversity and Human Rights for NHS Employers, said: “We are extremely proud of our Partners programme - which has been running for several years. It is the bedrock of our support to the health and social care sector in terms of diversity and inclusion - but is very much a two way relationship. Our Partners provide us with an insight into and offer us intelligence on the issues and challenges that face them in the areas of diversity and inclusion on a day to day basis. In return, we provide them with inputs on good and best practice from across both the public and private sectors and support individual diversity leads with building their confidence and sphere of influence within their own organisations. These Diversity Leader Awards are one way in which we help them to do this - by encouraging them to identify and publicly recognise those individuals and teams who have helped them in their work.”

Why were they nominated?

Harinder Dhaliwal, Assistant Director of Engagement for Derbyshire Healthcare, nominated Steve Trenchard and Carolyn Green for the Diversity Leaders Award. She said: “I chose to nominate Steve for this award because of his clear ‘human touch’ and living the NHS values every day to help continuously improve the services our Trust offers. His hard work around building sustainable relationships with the communities where health inequality and stigma around mental health still exists was also a motive for the nomination.

“I also decided to nominate Carolyn for the NHS Employers Diverse Leaders Award as I believe she is a great example of an inclusive leader. Her ability to mentor and champion staff from black and minority ethnic communities and supporting and encouraging others to achieve their highest potential is an attribute which deserves the highest recognition.”
